Community Building

Belonging doesn’t stop at the school doors. BLAC cultivates a sense of long-term community through alumni networks and social campaigns like #blacksuccessfromehs and #latinxsuccessfromehs. These platforms celebrate cultural pride and ongoing achievement, helping families see themselves as part of a larger legacy. For PTAs, this community-driven approach can be a powerful way to extend family engagement, foster intergenerational mentorship, and sustain connection beyond a single school year.

Community

Extending Belonging Beyond School Walls

PTAs have a powerful opportunity to expand the definition of school community beyond the classroom and the calendar year. Belonging doesn’t have to end with promotion or graduation. By fostering alumni networks and lifting up family stories, PTAs can help create an ongoing sense of connection, one where students and families remain visible and valued long after they leave. Whether through newsletters, reunion-style events, or social media highlights, PTAs can ensure that families continue to feel like part of a living legacy.

Centering Cultural Pride in Community Building

Community building is most powerful when it centers and celebrates the cultural identities within the school. PTAs can lead by showcasing family traditions, cultural achievements, and student heritage in public-facing ways—through storytelling events, displays, speaker panels, or heritage month celebrations. Uplifting the voices of families from historically underrepresented backgrounds reinforces pride, validates identity, and makes space for every child to see themselves as a meaningful part of the school’s narrative.

Creating Intergenerational Connections

One of the most impactful strategies PTAs can adopt is cultivating intergenerational mentorship. Alumni students and families have wisdom, encouragement, and inspiration to offer—and they often want to give back. PTAs can create touchpoints like alumni panels, “where are they now” features, or cross-grade family buddy systems to keep these voices in the mix. By activating alumni as role models, PTAs help create cycles of support that benefit current students and deepen long-term engagement.

Sustaining Visibility and Legacy

Community-building doesn’t happen by accident—it requires structures that sustain visibility and legacy over time. PTAs can play a critical role in this by documenting stories, celebrating milestones, and recognizing transitions not just as endings but as part of a continuum. Featuring alumni in event programs, celebrating family contributions over time, or creating community “legacy walls” are just a few ways to show that everyone who passes through the school remains part of its fabric.

Using Digital Platforms to Build Distributed Belonging

Social media and digital storytelling offer low-barrier ways to keep families connected, no matter where they are. PTAs can launch campaigns that celebrate student and alumni achievements, share culturally affirming content, or simply lift up joy within the school community. Hashtags and themed series (like “Throwback Thursdays” or “Alumni Spotlights”) can build an archive of shared pride. These digital spaces also help reinforce a message: once you’re part of the school community, you always belong.

A Framework for Action

PTAs looking to embed community building as a strategic focus might consider this guiding question:

How are we ensuring that every family—past and present—sees themselves as a valued, visible part of our school community?

From there, tangible actions could include:

  • Hosting alumni-family mixers or student mentoring events

  • Launching story-sharing campaigns tied to cultural or heritage celebrations

  • Partnering with educators to build legacy programs that include alumni

  • Creating digital “walls of celebration” that continue to grow year after year

  • Inviting former families back for key milestones or community forums

These practices affirm that community is not confined to a moment in time—it’s something PTAs can nurture and extend with intentionality and care.
