Why BLAC Exists
Mission
Students of color who pass through predominantly white institutions carry knowledge those institutions need, and almost no one asks them for it.
BLAC exists to find those graduates, reconnect them, record what they know, and turn it into changes their institutions can actually make.
Vision
A generation of students who never have to improvise their way through a place that was not built for them, because the place was rebuilt in the meantime.
We are working toward schools where belonging is designed into how the institution runs rather than announced once a year, and where no student has to be the one who figures it out alone.
How We Got Here
BLAC began in 2020 as a network for alumni of color from predominantly white institutions. It is still that.
What we learned from that work is that the same problems recur across schools, and that they are structural. Not a failure of intention, but a failure of design: how admissions follows up, how families get onboarded, who owns the retention conversation, whether anyone holds the alumni relationship after graduation.
So the mission produced a practice. BLAC now works directly with schools, universities, and organizations on those structures, and directly with students and alumni on the transitions those structures ask them to make. The commitment is the same one we started with. The work has moved closer to where the outcomes get decided.
