Hua Li

Colorado State University of Fort Collins, CO

2007

Hua Li Graduated from Colorado State in 2007, with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.

His education path started in JiangSu Province in China,in 1992, he graduated from a highly selective high school named, Haimen High School.

He was born and raised in a small village on the north bank of the Yangtze River. Like most living there, his mother was illiterate and his father only went to 7th grade. He is a first-generation college student and studied Electrical Engineering in Civil Aviation University of China (CAUC) in Tianjin, where he was first exposed to computers and wrote his first line of code. He developed a lifelong habit of learning and a love of Math, Science, and Technology. After graduation, he moved to Beijing for his graduate school study at Beijing University of Post and Telecommunication (BUPT), where he was first exposed to the Internet and was fascinated by its endless potential. He became a Linux Hacker often indulging himself in tinkling kernel code deep into the night. After graduating from BUPT with a Master's degree in 1999, he joined Bell Labs in Shanghai as a System Engineer working on Optical Network Systems for two years.

To pursue his Ph.D. degree, he moved to Colorado, US, where he researched and published on Information Theory and Reinforce Learning, which built a solid foundation for launching his career in Machine Learning.

He joined FICO after obtaining his Ph.D. degree in 2007, where he applied cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques such as neural networks to Payment Fraud Detection and Cyber Security. In 2014, he was recruited to Experian as Principal Scientist, to establish Datalabs, an enterprise-level R&D organization. While there he led teams to innovate in credit risk, fraud risk, identity linking, and other areas. He held numerous patents and is a well-recognized expert in the industry and well known for his creativity in machine learning and AI.

Currently, he works at Amazon as a Principal Applied Scientist, a prestigious position responsible for charting cross-organization Machine Learning Technology Roadmap and overseeing strategic projects aiming for delivering revenue at a level of billions of dollars.

In his free time, he loves to go out hiking or stay home playing board games with his family.
